Data Theft
Date theft is one of the most common online crimes; and one that leaves you completely violated. The other day I opened my email box to notice a communication from my bank. Since I receive my statement electronically, I recognized their style and logo. The email contained a warning saying that unless I registered my account for the Net Security my debit card (I do not have a credit card) will not be recognized for transactions on the Internet.
I was re-directed to a page that looked identical to the page of my bank. Through that page they asked me my account id, transaction id number, debit card number, the debit card (ATM) pin and lastly my date of birth.
I was about to enter the details when I noticed the address of the URL which was completely different from that of my bank. Alerted, I closed the site and called my bank. They denied sending such a mail. This is how I was saved from data theft – a very close shave indeed.
